Comparison
Which streaming platform to choose: community, selling, audience and age
The right choice starts with one question: do you want to build a community or sell during your live? Twitch and YouTube mostly serve community, Voggt and Whatnot serve selling, TikTok and Instagram serve discovery. Here is how to decide, with figures.

Start with your goal
- Build a loyal community: Twitch or YouTube. People come back for a person and a mood.
- Sell items live: Voggt, Whatnot or eBay Live. Viewers come to buy and payment is built in.
- Get discovered: TikTok or Instagram. Your live benefits from people already in the app.
The comparison
| Platform | Mostly for | Built-in selling | Published audience | Viewers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
YouTube | Community, replays | Limited | 50.3M visitors a month | All ages |
Instagram | Existing community | Limited | 45.2M visitors a month | Mostly young adults |
TikTok | Discovery, selling | Yes (TikTok Shop) | 28M visitors a month | One third under 25 |
Twitch | Community, gaming | No | No reliable public measure | Said to be young, not measured here |
Whatnot | Live selling | Yes | No published figure for France | Not published |
Voggt | Collectibles selling | Yes | Over 500,000 members announced in 2024 | Not published |
What the figures say about age
In France, the regulator Arcom finds that one third of TikTok and Snapchat visitors are under 25, but that TikTok’s average age has risen by over three years since 2022: its audience is broadening. In the United States, Pew Research shows the same gap: eight in ten adults aged 18 to 29 use Instagram, against 19% of those 65 and over, while YouTube is used by a majority of every age group.
For Twitch, Voggt and Whatnot, we found no reliable age breakdown for France. The Twitch statistics in circulation contradict each other: better to look at who actually comes to your channel.
User counts are not enough
A huge platform gives you nothing if nobody finds you there. Ask yourself instead:
- Is your audience already there? A small specialist platform beats a giant where your niche is invisible.
- Can you stream there from OBS? Conditions vary by platform and account.
- Does the format suit you? Vertical on mobile, horizontal on Twitch and YouTube.
- How do you earn money: sales, subscriptions, donations or ads?
Our view, and where we stand
HypeLayer sells overlays, not platforms: keep that in mind as you read. Your overlays work wherever OBS can stream, but the interactions that read chat only work on Voggt today. If you are starting out in trading cards, begin where your buyers already are, then add a second channel once your rhythm is set.
